“Why,” you may ask, “would anyone lug this giant monstrosity of a sword around a world where people fly space ships and shoot laser guns?”

There are many answers to this question, but perhaps the most succinct is: “Exactly!”

To understand how utterly unnecessary this sword is, as either a tool or an accessory, is to understand the nature of its wielder, Finn Wyoming. And I use the word “wielder” lightly, because, really, he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. It just looks cool to him. It looks like something a hero should carry, so Finn carries it. It’s only by pure coincidence that the sword itself should have a destiny every bit as epic as the one Finn often imagines for himself.

He also carries it because *I* think it’s cool. Because John Carter, Cloud Strife, and yes, even young Skywalker carried swords into laser battles, so does Finn. He just does it with a bit more swagger and a lot less competence.
